Lakeview Village

Project Brief

Step into the transformation of a 1960s single-story house, an ambitious project that brought timeless design into the 21st century. This house had unique qualities, including a load-bearing brick masonry structure, a history of renovations, and a sunken main living area leading to a spacious rear yard. The challenge was to modernize it while preserving its original charm.

Challenges

The journey involved more than meets the eye. Removal of obstructing columns and walls and replacing them with a single 36" glulam beam opened up the space, creating a breathtaking 1 ½ story ceiling with garden views. To maintain comfort and efficiency, exterior steel awnings transformed into interior light shelves, housing heating and lighting systems. The standout was the preservation of a stand of pines in the rear yard, creating an expansive 'outdoor room.’

Approach

Our approach was a harmonious blend of preservation and innovation. A new roof system, seamlessly integrated over the existing clear cedar structure, not only provided structural integrity but also featured a striking galv-alum metal roof. Replacing parapets with overhangs not only enhanced aesthetics but also improved weather protection and sun shading. Double doors in the master bedroom and living/dining rooms connected seamlessly to the sunken patio, enlarging interior spaces and enhancing the natural ambiance.

Reflections
